Abstract
Building resilience has become increasingly important as coastal communities cope with the effects of climate change. This study examined the association between adaptive capacity and vulnerability and community resilience in four relocated coastal barangays in the Philippine municipality of Basey, Samar. Cochran's formula was used to determine a sample size of 360 participants through stratified random sampling. Descriptive statistics (weighted mean, frequency, and percentage distribution) were used to determine the type and degree of adaptive capacity and vulnerability in relation to community resilience. The findings indicate that the four relocated barangays have great adaptive potential but exhibit varying degrees of vulnerability. Despite being located in coastal areas, the communities demonstrate very high resilience. A slight positive correlation was found between adaptive capacity and community resilience, while no significant correlation was found between vulnerability and community resilience. These findings suggest that while adaptive capacity and vulnerability are important determinants of community resilience, other factors, such as cultural capital, political capital, and topographical position, also merit consideration. Furthermore, sustainable livelihoods that reflect the adaptive capacity and vulnerability of local people are essential for long-term community sustainability.
