Abstract
Village-owned enterprises (VOEs) in Indonesia show different levels of sustainability, even though they receive government support and are rooted in strong community traditions. However, the ways in which different dimensions of social capital affect their performance are still not well understood, especially the mediating role of knowledge transfer in collectivist cultural settings. This study investigates how cognitive, structural, and relational capital influence the sustainable performance of VOEs through knowledge transfer mechanisms. Structural equation modeling is used to analyze data collected from agricultural VOEs in several regencies of Central Java. The sample includes VOEs at different stages of development and operating in horticulture, livestock, and fisheries. Data were gathered through structured questionnaires completed by VOE managers. The results indicate that cognitive and relational capital have a significant positive effect on sustainable performance, while structural capital does not have a significant direct effect. Knowledge transfer significantly mediates the relationship between relational and structural capital and sustainable performance, but it does not mediate the effect of cognitive capital. These findings suggest that shared values and strong relationships among stakeholders are the most important factors for VOE success in collectivist cultures, while formal structures mainly support knowledge exchange rather than directly improving performance. This study contributes to rural development by showing how community-based enterprises can use social capital to improve sustainability, and it offers practical implications for managers and policymakers in designing capacity-building programs across Southeast Asia.
